The present study was designed to investigate the influence of sex role identity on adaptation after breast surgery, and to intervene on self concept for improving adaptation process by understanding & describing about psychological and emotional
aspects of who had breast surgery. Self concept is the one of 4 adaption form including physical, personal, and interpersonal self according to Roy's adaption model.
The subjects in this study were 107 patients being operated at general surgery department of Chungnam University Hospital in Daejon. Data was collected at postoperative 7-10th day using the Short Form Bem Sex Role Identity Iventory, Jacox &
Stewart's
Health Self Concept, Beck' s Depression Inventory, Zung's SRAS, and Osgood's Semantic Differential Method from Mar. 1989 to Feb. 1992.
The data were analysed by use of frequency, ANOVA, t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients of SPSS program
@ES The results of the study were as follows
@EN 1. There was no significant difference of degree of health self concept, depression, anxiety, body image according to sex role identity.
2. Among the demographic characteristics of subjects, level of health self concept was statistically significant difference in age(F=5.1349, P=.0007), marital periods(F=4.4120, P=0058), and educational level(F=8.4928, P=0004), level of
depression
was
statistically significant difference in educational level(F=5.0424, P=0081), level of anxiety was statistically significant difference in age(F=8.0675, P=0006), marital status(t=-2.40, P.018), marital periods(F=3.1459, P=.0283), and educational
level
(F=3.2507, P=.0427), and level of body image was statistically significant difference in age(F=7.7233, P=0007), marital periods(F=2.8781, P=.0396), and occupation(t=-1.99,
3. There was no significant correlation between health self concept, depression, anxiety, and body image.
Considering these survey results, these is no discrimination of self concept according to sex role identity of the patient after breast surgery. This means, cancer diagnosing it self and surgical experience it self are might be conceived as much
more
influence on patient than the sex role identity. Accordingly, we could see that sex role identity is not affect the self concept(adaption) after breast surgery.
When we do as a psycho-emotional nursing intervention for the patient of breast surgery, they could be positive and undistressed self concept during adaptation process if we approach her with demographic characteristics rather than sex role
identity.
